Predicting the Top 3 Films at the Domestic Box Office | September 6-8, 2024

Week 36 | September 6–8, 2024
Top 10 3-Day Ranges | Weekend 36, 2024: $145M – $185M

1. Beetle Juice Beetle Juice
Warner Bros. | NEW
Weekend range: $115 million–$145 million
Showtime market share: 36%

Advantages

  • For three weekends, the barrier Deadpool/Stranger/It ends with us was not destroyed (although Monday’s actual data was eventually moved) It ends with us to #5 this week). Apparently, all it took to break that streak was to say “Beetlejuice” twice as Warner Bros. gears up for a splashy debut Beetle juice Beetle juiceThe hotly anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 hit ghost comedy. The film has so far garnered solid reviews, 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, after a successful early debut at the Venice Film Festival and an even earlier press conference (a sign of confidence from the studio). Although more reviews are expected Tuesday from screenings for all media outlets, the positive word of mouth was enough to boost expectations to more than $100 million in its opening weekend.
  • Another holistic benefit of the second Beetle juice earning over $100 million this coming weekend, it will single-handedly lift the overall box office back into the nine figures after two weak weekends in which repeat titles hovered around the $80 million mark. With the exception of Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin (whose deceased characters are credited with a single line in the film), most of the main nostalgia players from the first film return, including Michael Keaton as the iconic Bio-Exorcist, Winona Ryder as Lydia, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia. Hot, up-and-coming Jenna Ortega from Scream franchise and Burton’s hit Wednesday series is set to appeal to Gen Alphas, with a cast of reliable character actors (Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, Danny DeVito) rounding out the package. That delicious mix of familiar faces, returning characters, and Burton’s signature macabre humor/cartoony visuals will hopefully give this film a solid Halloween presence (once the story is established). Well-positioned marketing tie-ins with Fanta and Keebler, as well as riding the wave of the signature popcorn bucket at Regal, AMC, and Cinemark, can only boost ticket sales.

Defects

  • Coming 36 years after the original, Beetle juice Beetle juice is one of the longest running direct sequels in history Best Pistol: Maverick (36 years old), Blade Runner 2049 (33 years old), Coming to America (33 years old), The Odd Couple II (30 years) and (if you count) Mary Poppins Returns (54 years old). Except Maverickthese films weren’t necessarily well-received, and the aging of the actors during their long march to the screen plays a part in that. Beetle juice A sequel was in the works shortly after the first film became a surprise hit in March 1988, but Burton, busy with the Batman franchise, abandoned many scripts, such as Beetlejuice Hawaiian Style gathering dust. After two Batman movies, Burton and Keaton finally teamed up to make a Disney dud Foolan experience so bitter that it almost led Burton to retire from filmmaking. Keaton did not enjoy the experience either. Hence, the Burton-Keaton pairing is not as established or fruitful as the director’s eight-film collaboration with Johnny Depp.

Because Burton earned over a billion dollars for Disney with the 2010 live-action film. Alice in Wonderland (career best), his box office performance has declined, especially domestically. Here’s the lowdown…

  • Fool (2019) – $114.7 million domestic/$353.1 million worldwide
  • Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016) – $87.2 million domestic/$295.9 million worldwide
  • Dark shadows (2012) – $79.7 million domestic/$245.5 million worldwide
  • Frankenweenie (2012) – $35.2 million domestic/$81.1 million worldwide
  • Big eyes (2014) – $14.4 million domestic/$27.3 million worldwide

Big eyes Couldn’t get it back Ed Wood the energy of a biopic while reworking a Disney classic (Fool), cult TV show (Dark shadows), and even his own 1984 short film (Frankenweenie) lacked his usual flair for recycling pop culture artifacts. This list does not include Burton-produced bombs, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter AND Alice Through the Looking Glass. The name “Tim Burton” used to be a selling point in the vein of Steven Spielberg or Christopher Nolan, but that’s not the case these days. It’s possible that Burton’s gothic fantasy has seen its day, though returning to familiar ground Beetle juice Beetle juice We hope it rekindles the world’s love for this dark creator.

2. Deadpool and Wolverine
Marvel Studios | Week 7
Weekend range: $7 million–$10 million
Showtime market share: 8%

Advantages

With a domestic turnover of USD 603.9 million, Deadpool and Wolverine finally wants to surpass the one from 2012 The Avengers ($623.3 million) as the 5th highest-grossing MCU title in the United States, which it will likely reach around or just after this upcoming frame. After earning $15.4 million last weekend, we expect it to drop around or below 50%, which is still great for the title. Disney kept the title exclusive to theaters for 40 days after its release, which helped boost box office sales in later frames. Releasing blockbusters to home video, even when they are high on the theatrical charts, has become a trend this year, similar to when Warner Dune: Part Two on digital media just a month and a half after its premiere… even though the film was still in the top five at the box office.

Defects

Beetlejuice is sucking all the oxygen out of the room at the box office this weekend, meaning Merc With a Mouth will end its reign at the top after winning five of the last six weekends. Despite Deadpool and WolverineThe percentage declines have been getting smaller with each weekend, which will change things after a -16% drop over Labor Day weekend was its best result.

THROW:

3. It ends with us
Sony Pictures | Week 5
Weekend range: $4 million–$6 million
Showtime market share: 6%

3.Front room
A24 | NEW
Weekend range: $4 million–$6 million
Showtime market share: 6%

Advantages

Like Deadpool and Wolverinethe romantic drama that blew the world away It ends with us has seen lower declines in back-to-back weekends. We’re looking at potentially the lowest drop yet for a Blake Lively-starring film, even as A24 prepares to counterattack the female demo with its new horror programmer, Front room. Written and directed by Max and Sam Eggers, brothers Witch directed by Robert Eggers, the film stars famous singer/actress Brandy Norwood (known as Brandy) as a pregnant woman who takes in her husband’s deranged/estranged stepmother. Microaggressions quickly escalate into macroaggressions. The story is based on a short story by British writer Susan Hill, whose Woman in black has been successfully adapted several times and was recently made into a series.

Defects

Monday facts rejected It ends with us from the originally forecasted position of #3 on Labor Day to position #5 on Reagan AND Whirlwinds. It could have bounced back if not for A24 counterprogramming Beetlejuice with an R rating Front roomwhich could take away our throne no. 3. We have both titles neck and neck, although Front room can be flat in the same way Scared last weekend. Much of the marketing is anchored by Brandy, who hasn’t starred in a major motion picture since Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor in 2013. The star was relegated to streaming, such as Best. Holidays. Ever!though A24’s arthouse horror flick could be just the ticket to relaunching her film career. Reviews aren’t in yet, which is never a good sign.
